on saturday we ventured up into the blue ridge mountains for a picnic on rocky knob. the weather couldn't have been more perfect--the bright, warm sunshine was filtered through the leaves, so that the result was comfortable and breezy temperatures. there are lots of rocks around that elise, halle, luke, & ian enjoyed climbing on. the sechrests were generous to get lots of chicken and fixings for everyone to enjoy. it was nice to have janet, christopher, & lucille join us on the mountain and around. the boys played some frisbee, everyone visited and the kids ran around, so i'd say it was a success. from there we went back down to mabry's mill and walked around. elise & ian enjoyed being pushed around by their uncles in their strollers. (i started out as a pusher, but after i refused to run & play "chicken" i got booted out and one of the uncles took over.) after walking around there for a while, we went on down the mountain to nancy's candy shop. the best thing about it, is they give you lots of free samples of their fudges (everything from peanut butter and jelly to grasshopper to lemon chiffon to snickers). after we'd had our fill, we drove down squirrel spur and headed back home to prepare for a cookout. mama & daddy had a fire in the pit & hot dogs with all the trimmings. the kids really got a kick out of "cooking" their own hot dogs. how well they did it is debatable, but they had a ball, so that's what matters. after supper most of the "kids" decided to go see War of the Worlds at the drive-in, but when we got there, the drive-in was full and they turned us away. we were bummed, particularly elise & halle who were really excited about it. but we went back to grandma's and just visited for a while. so it turned out all right anyway. the main thing is being together!
