Perspectives

The other night we were in the car coming home from somewhere and the kids were talking in the back.  I heard Elise ask Ian, "Hey, do you know what a contraction is?"  Immediately I thought about labor and delivery and wondered how much of my pregnancy had sunk into her little mind.  Ian answered, "No, I don't even know what that is."  Elise said, "Yes you do.  You just did one.  Don't.  That's a contraction.  It comes from do and not.  Can't is one and wouldn't is one.  They're all contractions."  I had to laugh and realized how different our perspectives on contractions were.

In other news, I made a cheesecake the other night.  I've made one before, but its always been "so-so".  Its usually too done around the edges, too soft in the middle or it cracks on top.  This one was perfect, or pretty darn close, if I do say so myself.  Apparently a water bath does the trick.  Well, now that I think about it, I think I'd better go have another piece...

The Good Ol' Days

Elise was sitting at the table, talking to us while Cory & I were in the kitchen fixing lunch.  Ian and Merry Grace were fussing over some toy, and were just being pretty loud.  All of a sudden Elise sighed and said, very longingly, "Ah, I miss the good ol' days . . .  back when it was just me and Mama and Daddy."  We both had a good laugh and then Cory asked her, "Well, who do you want to give away?"  Elise answered, "Well, I wouldn't really want to give anyone away.  I guess I just wish they were shy kids.  You know, then they wouldn't really say anything and it'd be nice and quiet around here."

Too hilarious.

My Cute Niece

I watched Ally and Charles Allen (my niece & nephew) today.  The kids all had a great time playing and were as good as gold.  Ally helped me make chocolate cupcakes.  Licking the bowl was her favorite part.  Which do you think is sweeter--this little darlin' or the cupcakes?  She is seriously so cute and I could just eat her up.  I think she likes me pretty well, but she LOVES her uncle Cory.  I tried to get her cleaned up before her mom came back, but I think there might have been some chocolate still in her hair...or on her shirt...or...well, you get the picture. :)  Maybe it wasn't too bad so she'll let me watch her again. :)

Sometimes You Can't Win

A couple of nights ago, I woke around 4am to what sounded like whispered conversation from the room Elise and Ian share.  I listened to the muffled sounds for a second and then heard Elise whisper loudly and tersely, "Ian!  Stop it!!"  There was a short pause and then in a not-so-whispered voice, "Ian!!  I told you to stop it!"  So I interevened from my bedroom, calling out, "Elise, what's the matter?"  She hollars back, in a not-too-happy voice, "Ian won't  quit bothering me!"  I wondered what he was doing at 4am that could be bothering her enough to cause this commotion, so I asked that very question.  "He's breathing too loud!!!", she called back.  Seriously, I'm awake at this ridiculous hour because he's breathing so loud?!  At this point she gives a loud "Harrrumph!" and marched into our bedroom.  Ian followed close behind, sad that Elise had left him alone.  In trying to sort things out, I ordered Ian over to the toddler bed in the corner of our room (the one Merry Grace had already abandoned for the night) and sent Elise back to her room.  Ian began crying from his corner because "he missed his Sisi", at the same time Elise began crying from her room because she was scared without Ian in there.  Good grief!  Fortunately, Elise decided to try and put up with the loud breathing and Ian promised to try not to breathe so loud and we all agreed that we needed a little bit more sleep.  Sometimes you just can't win for losing. :)

Where do they come up with this stuff?

Ian came up to me tonight with a problem.

Ian: "I need some medicine."
Me:  "You do?  What's wrong?"
Ian:  "I sound like an old man!"
Me:  Silence

So he goes up to Cory with the same problem.

Ian: "I need some medicine."
Cory: "Oh yeah? Are you sick?"
Ian: "I sound like an old man."
Cory: "I don't think that's a real sickness."

Ian: (walking off with a very grumpy look on his face) Yes it is a real disease!  (now hollaring back into the kitchen) Don't you hear me?!   I still sound like an old man!

Family Ties and Other Fun Stuff

This past weekend my whole family converged on our little home front for a fun weekend.  My brother, Ethan, flew in from school out west, my parents and other brothers came from home and Ethan's fiancee joined us for some fun family times.  Ethan & Lois are getting married this summer, but for now are doing the long distance relationship and so they treasure the few visits they get every little bit.  This weekend coincided with Ethan's birthday, so we celebrated with him in person for the first time in about 4 or 5 years.

Obviously, we partied hard. :)

Ethan was still recovering from a nasty cold, so we didn't actually let him blow out his candles.  But there was plenty of help.  It was delicious, too.  Lois outdid herself with the yummy dishes she fixed, including this ice cream cake.

Mis Hermanos:  Ethan, Logan & Adam

And a couple of pictures of the happy couple.  They are so adorable.

Our little family.  We are a cute bunch.  It took about two hours for us to get ready and about 30 seconds to get a couple of pictures of us.  What an ordeal.

This baby just gets cuter and cuter...if that's possible.  Somehow it seems to be.

Maybe its because she's taking after her big sister.  This girl keeps us laughing.

Our biggest challenge with Ian was keeping that white shirt clean.  That's like asking a bee to stop making honey.  You guessed it--impossible.

Dang it, we're a cute family. :)

And in two, completely unrelated items, Cory took the older kids to Elise's softball practice, while I stayed home with the two little girls.  Ian had wanted to watch a little bit of Star Wars tonight, but we had told him if he went to practice with Elise he wouldn't have time for Star Wars.  In the car Elise said to Ian, "I can't believe you gave up Star Wars!!"  He said, "Well, I love you more than Star Wars."

I was working on laundry while they were gone and at one point sneezed really loud.  Merry Grace just looked at me and I asked her, "What was that?"  She answered quickly, "A bless you!"

Then, it look like I'm doing about 15 lbs. more laundry these days, but its gotten oh-so-much cuter. :)

The Maid is Gone

Somewhere over the last few months, my kids have come to think of me as a maid.  And somewhere along the way, I let them believe that.  I'm not sure exactly how it happened because I've always been pretty good about getting them to help out, but it did and it has.  I think there were times it was easier to do things myself.  But whatever the case may be, yesterday, the maid moved out and Mom moved back in.  Things are definitely going to be shaken up a bit.  Don't get me wrong, the kids are really good to pitch in and help out when I ask them.  Its just that they've started making messes that I know they have no intention of cleaning up.  And if they did, it would never have been made in the first place.   We'll see how it goes.  It may be a rude awakening for everyone for a few days, but its been too long coming.   For example, yesterday while I laid baby Paige down for a nap, Merry Grace got a half a bag of tortilla chips out of the pantry and dumped them out onto the ottoman (and the floor) in the living room.  First of all, we don't allow food in the living room.  Second of all, no matter where you might be eating, its never okay to just randomly dump the bag out.  Instead of just vacuuming it up myself, which before yesterday I probably would have done, and instead of completely going berserk (which I was sorely tempted to do), I had Merry Grace (and Ian-who was an accomplice) clean the entire mess up.  And they did.  It took a while, but they did it.  Then last night I had the kids help out in a couple of places--Elise loaded the dishwasher and Ian scrubbed the tub.  Can I just say that he did a great job?!  Elise did too, of course, but I was surprised by how much fun Ian had with the tub.  He even enjoyed it so much he offered to clean my shower too.  And he did!!!  So we're off to a rolling start.  Hopefully it will go well, because the maid is not moving back in anytime soon.

What does it spell?

I wore a navy blue, zip-up jacket with the word "CAROLINA" across the front.  Merry Grace wanted to know what the  "abc's spelled".  I asked her to guess and she said, "I don't know.  Maybe 'I love jackets'?"  Hilarious.  Just what I've always wanted on a sweatshirt. :)

How We've Been Enjoying the Warm Weather

Ah, warm weather.  You came just when we needed that breath of fresh air the most.  You tempted us with thoughts of the pool, lazy days at the beach, walking barefoot through the grass, and cook-outs.  You had us on our front porches, working in the yard and going to the park.  And just when we'd gotten used to the idea, you left us.  Yes, you threw us like yesterdays garbage--right back into winter.  So instead of spending the morning planting my flowers, I'm inside facing the mountain of laundry you let me forget for a few days.  But, I won't be bitter.  I'll just remember those few good days we had and hope you come back soon.  Seriously.  Because next time I might not be so forgiving...

What We Did with Our Time

We dug in the dirt. (a.k.a. The front yard.)

We rode our bikes--a lot!  (Merry Grace spent quite a bit of time in the hedges, as her steering leaves something to be desired.)

We played hopscotch.  And we even made up our new rules for it.  (And we were good at it!!!)

We played outside on blankets, and even napped out there in the sunshine if we got tired of playing.

We ate popsicles on the front porch and got stickier than you can imagine.

We basked in the sunshine.

We TOTALLY broke out the sunglasses!

We were happy!!!

We had our best friends spend the night with us.  (Yes, there is a lot of make-up and a lot of attitude in this picture. :))

We mopped the porch with bubble bath. (Which then had to really be mopped up by a grown up.  But even that was okay because it felt so nice to be outside!)

We washed the car.  Yes, it was about as clean as you'd imagine it to be. (i.e. It was dirtier than when we started.)

We used our imaginations--and a whole roll of toilet paper. :)

We planted flowers.  And if any blooms "fell" off, Ian insisted I wear the blossoms tucked behind my ear because it was "so pretty".

We ate Krispy Kreme doughnuts for breakfast.  On the front porch.

We ate ice cream sundaes.  YUM!!!

Sometimes we just went barefoot.  That was pretty fun too.

But it was the being together that was the best.  (Are these two not too cute?!  And yes, Ian played so hard, he wore his sock out. :))

Interview

As part of an Internet tag, I agreed to be interviewed by my cousin's wonderful wife, Alayna.  She has traveled the world, is smart, talented, accomplished, & beautiful.  And she asks great interview questions.  So if you'd like to be interviewed by me, leave a comment & your email address (if I don't have it) and I'll send you 5 interview questions to post, along with your answers, on your blog. :)  This was really a lot of fun.  Enjoy!

1) You have four beautiful kids, a husband, a house, a cute dog, and a huge church calling.  What is your secret to managing it all?

Well, I wish I knew what the secret was!!!  There are a lot of mom's I know of whom I'd like to ask the same question.  What I often wonder is why I didn't accomplish more when I only had one child, or two children.  Knowing how busy I am now makes me wonder what I did with the extra time I must have had. :)  Although I'm not serving in Relief Society anymore, I think the things that kept us going during that time (which was an incredibly demanding time) are the same things that keep us going on a daily basis these days too.  First, the Lord blesses us.  In big ways and small ways.  He helps me have the strength to do what needs to be done.  Second, I married well.  Besides all Cory does to provide for the family (which is a big deal) he's a great husband and father.  I know how much he loves me and loves our kids by all the ways he serves us and pitches in wherever he's most needed.  Whether its loading the dishwasher, changing a diaper or tucking a child into bed, he will do it all.  Without his help, I honestly cannot fathom how we'd make it. :)  Third, I think I try to have a sense of humor about things.  I can't say that always works, but it certainly helps.  I think Sister Hinckley said it best, when she said, "I can either laugh or cry and crying gives me a headache."  So I try to follow that advice and laugh, when I can.  There are days where I really feel like we're doing a good job and have things together and other days I'm sure we're destined for the loony bin.   But we just keep trying and keep moving forward and try to enjoy each other and enjoy our life as much as we can. :)  No matter how stressed I get sometimes (and I definitely do get stressed sometimes) I really do love this time in our life with lots of kids around and the busy-ness of it all.  I know that one day, I really am going to miss it.

2) Every child is different.  What surprised you most about your kids different personalities?  How are they alike? Different?

I think what has amazed me about my kids is how they came to me with distinct personalities and unique talents.  I'm always surprised by how early their individuality becomes apparent.  There are ways they are alike, though.  They definitely have physical characteristics that link them to our little family.  I think they are all well-behaved and have good manners.  They are also really tender-hearted and protective of one another.  There is definitely an innate difference between the girls and Ian.  I remember when Elise and Ian were small & they were playing Barbies together.  Elise was brushing their hair, fixing their clothes and lining them up for a picnic.  Ian had them in the air, flying them around like airplanes.  They are just different!  They definitely have their own personalities.

Elise is super dependable.  She has a great memory and if she has put something somewhere or has just seen something around, she can almost always remember where it is or where she saw it.  She loves animals.  She is a peacemaker.  She is so kind to others, never wanting to hurt another person's feelings.  One of her strengths is making the right choice and doing the right thing no matter what.  She isn't afraid to stand up for what she knows is right, even if it isn't the easy thing to do.  She's spunky and fun to be around.

Ian is full of energy.  Sometimes I think I can just feel the energy humming off of him.  He's very innocent and unassuming in a lot of ways.  He loves to hug and kiss Cory & I and his sisters.  He also has a lot of physical coordination.  He never hits his sisters.  No matter how much they may aggravate him sometimes, he never ever retaliates by hitting, kicking or punching.  He's also very good with technology.  I taught him once how to get to the ring tones on my phone.  You have to push about 6 different buttons, choosing different items from different menus.  He remembered each step after only showing him once.

Merry Grace has a lot of personality.  She's very independent and wants to do things on her own.  She is really, really funny and keeps us laughing a lot.  She has a contagious laugh that often we all find ourselves laughing along with her, just because she's laughing.  She's also very, very motherly for her age.  She loves doing "mommy duties" with Paige and also her baby dolls.  She loves helping me with whatever task I am doing--cooking, laundry, dishes, making the bed--whatever it is, she will be right there helping.  She also loves to go places.  If someone is leaving in the car, you can be sure she wants to ride along.

Paige is still really small, so we're just seeing her personality emerge.  She's certainly a happy, content baby.  She smiles like no other, at anyone who will notice her.  She loves attention and loves to be talked to and played with. She is super patient and loving.  I can't wait to see what develops as she gets older.

As I thought about each of the kids, I thought about how each person's personality adds and contributes to our family life.  Each person's strengths and abilities make our family better and more complete.  We interact better when we're all together.  I think we're all happiest when we're all together. :)

3) If you had one day where your kids were taken care of, your husband was content, and you had no chores to do, how would you spend it?

I would definitely spend it on the beach with a good book.  I would stay from sun-up to sun-down, as those are some of the best times on the beach.  I just love being on the beach.  I love dosing off in the warm sun (impossible to do with kids) or dragging my chair to the edge of the waves to cool me off.  I don't know what it is about being on the beach that just makes life seem better.

4) How has being raised in the South affected your personality?  Do you think you would be a different person if you grew up somewhere else?

I love having grown up in the South.  I definitely have a healthy dose of Southern pride.  I think I'm friendlier for having grown up here.  I also think the characteristics I value in others has a lot to do with where I was born and how I was raised.  My roots in the South go way back, too.  Both sides of my family are Southern as far back as I can trace.  The sights, sounds and smells that are wonderful and familiar to me have a lot to do with Southern cooking and Southern hospitality.  I love the song "Where I'm From" by Jason Michael Carroll.  I think the choruses really nail some of what I love about being from the south.  It goes:

"I'm from the front pew of a wooden white church,
The courthouse clock it still
don't work,
Where a man's word means everything.
Where moms and dads were high school flames,
Gave their children grandmothers maiden name.
Yes it may not sound like much,
But its where I'm from.

Where the quarterback dates the homecoming queen,
The truck's a ford and the tractor's green.
And Amazing Grace is what we sing.
Where there's a county fair every fall,
And your friends are there no matter when you call
Yeah It may not sound like much but it's
Where I'm from."

I'm sure I would be a little different if I had been raised somewhere else, although the most meaningful parts of who I am, I feel like come from being raised a member of the church.  And while I think its being around family that means the most about where you live, I love the South and don't ever want to live anywhere else.

5) How did you and Corey meet, and how do you guys find time for each other?

Cory & I met at EFY when I was 16 and he was about a month away from leaving on his mission.  My best friend was in the same group as he was and while getting a drink of water during the first dance, she introduced the two of us.  I remember thinking he had the bluest eyes I'd ever seen and he said, "Save me a dance."  That's what started it all. :)  We wrote while he was on his mission, I graduated from high school in June and he came home July and we actually went on our first date.  We dated for a year before we got married, and here we are almost 10 years later.  It is really hard to find time together sometimes.  The best thing is that we try to go on a date at least a couple of times a month, more if we can manage.  We trade off baby-sitting with Cory's siblings which is a lifesaver.  Once a week we sit down and talk about how we're doing as a couple, how we're doing as parents and what our kids might need.  That is a really nice way to just touch base about how our family is doing.  The other thing is that we really try to have fun together, which Cory gets a lot of credit for.  He's just fun to be around so he makes everything more fun, whether its cooking dinner together, folding laundry, watching the tarheels play basketball, or work in the yard.  I think the more time that passes, the more amazed I am by his many talents and the more gratitude I feel that he's my husband.  I'm definitely one lucky gal!

Qualities to Look For

Not too long ago, Elise and her cousin were writing and Elise wrote this list of qualities she is looking for in a husband.

Charming, well mannered, handsome, missionary, nice, brave, cheers for UNC, sweet, goes to church, chews with mouth closed, nice to other people, close to your age...I think she's off to a great start with this list.  I hope one day she finds him. :)

Egg Toss

Is there anything more fun than cracking an egg?  I had two eggs that needed to be thrown out and Ian--literally--threw them out for me.  I can only hope it wasn't so much fun that I end up short a dozen eggs in the morning. :)

In other Ian shenanigans, yesterday he managed to stop up two toilets within a 5 minute period.  One was able to be unstopped with just a little plunging.  The other one was impacted with toilet paper.  And--of course--he had flushed it at least twice, causing it to overflow all over the bathroom floor.  And--of course--it was so impacted that I had to reach down in the toilet and unclog it with my hands.  Ugh.  It had overflown into the trashcan next to the toilet, so that was a nasty mess to clean up.  It took a bit to clean up that little incident.  My consolation was that their was no poopy in the toilet I had to stick my hands in.  Thank goodness for the little things. :)
