most of these are elise-isms...
she keeps calling merry grace "brand-new". i think its so adorable, although i sort of envision that as an insult. like if someone does something dumb or naive, telling them they are brand-new. i don't know. but its so cute to hear her call the baby that.
she also said the reason it's taking so long is that Jesus has to make merry grace even cuter.
she wanted to make tommy a valentine yesterday. we've been making them for all her cousins/friends or whatever this week, just to be on the ball. i helped her do it, but then she wanted to write "i love you" on it. i felt that was a little much, considering she has never actually spoken to him & she kept saying, "but i need to write that because i do love him." or "i have to say i love you becuase he's so handsome." we decided to call cory, who (with no input from me) agreed that another phrase was more appropriate. finally we compromised on "be mine" and we put two pieces of chocolate candy in his envelope. oh well...teenage years are going to be brutal!
she was such a great helper the other day. one day i had swept the kitchen, but got sidetracked before i threw the pile of trash away. a little later i came back through and noticed that it was gone. i immediately wondered if it was one of the kids or the dog & where the heck was it! i asked elise and she told me that she had put it in the dustpan & thrown it away. wow! then later i asked her to take an empty laundry basket into the laundry room so it would be ready for me to put the clean clothes in. the next thing i knew she was bringing the basket back out, full of clothes! she had gotten all the clothes out of the dryer and put them in the basket. amazing! it was especially touching that i didn't even hint to her to do these things. they were totally spontaneous and appreciated.
what a great girl!

Elise has good parents.
thanks. some days i really feel that. others i think i've messed up their whole childhood! but i guess that just comes with the territory. i sure do love them, though!
Well said to Adrian's comment! And that is sweet that Elise did those things without being asked. That makes it even more special!
haha! i think she really does love him in the way a four-year-old can love someone. i thought it was a little forward and serious sounding which was my rationale for not approving of it. we were on the same page...maybe just a different paragraph.
I remember when I was in kindergarten there was a little boy named Jesse Coates, who for some unknown reason I absolutely adored. We made these little faces sipping a milk carton to hang in the hall, and the parents were invited to come and view them. When my mom saw mine she was upset and embarrassed and worried because I had written I love Jesse all over it. I vaguely remember this event, but my mom says it still haunts her to this day how upset she was. I guess it is hard to know what to do. Kids throw some real curve-balls, and if you are like me you worry about what might become a long term issue or problem, what will i regret 26 years from now. I wonder. It could be a major over-reaction, or a major under-reaction. It is so scary. since I am more likely to over-react, I try to temper myself accordingly. I figure that way the odds are in my favor.
that's hilarious! kids are unpredictable & you never know exactly what they picked up from who & how they put things together to come up with what they do. its so hard to figure things out exactly. you know, sometimes you'll have that moment where you just KNOW you handled it right. everything just clicked and you both "got it" and came out feeling wonderful. then there are the times when you know you messed it up, just as surely. and the majority of the time, only time will tell. you just have to do your best and hope it turns out alright. i feel like i go back & forth between the two. in one situation i feel like i over-react & the next time i feel like i under-react! that balance thing is tricky for me....
