How We've Been Enjoying the Warm Weather

Ah, warm weather.  You came just when we needed that breath of fresh air the most.  You tempted us with thoughts of the pool, lazy days at the beach, walking barefoot through the grass, and cook-outs.  You had us on our front porches, working in the yard and going to the park.  And just when we'd gotten used to the idea, you left us.  Yes, you threw us like yesterdays garbage--right back into winter.  So instead of spending the morning planting my flowers, I'm inside facing the mountain of laundry you let me forget for a few days.  But, I won't be bitter.  I'll just remember those few good days we had and hope you come back soon.  Seriously.  Because next time I might not be so forgiving...

What We Did with Our Time

We dug in the dirt. (a.k.a. The front yard.)

We rode our bikes--a lot!  (Merry Grace spent quite a bit of time in the hedges, as her steering leaves something to be desired.)

We played hopscotch.  And we even made up our new rules for it.  (And we were good at it!!!)

We played outside on blankets, and even napped out there in the sunshine if we got tired of playing.

We ate popsicles on the front porch and got stickier than you can imagine.

We basked in the sunshine.

We TOTALLY broke out the sunglasses!

We were happy!!!

We had our best friends spend the night with us.  (Yes, there is a lot of make-up and a lot of attitude in this picture. :))

We mopped the porch with bubble bath. (Which then had to really be mopped up by a grown up.  But even that was okay because it felt so nice to be outside!)

We washed the car.  Yes, it was about as clean as you'd imagine it to be. (i.e. It was dirtier than when we started.)

We used our imaginations--and a whole roll of toilet paper. :)

We planted flowers.  And if any blooms "fell" off, Ian insisted I wear the blossoms tucked behind my ear because it was "so pretty".

We ate Krispy Kreme doughnuts for breakfast.  On the front porch.

We ate ice cream sundaes.  YUM!!!

Sometimes we just went barefoot.  That was pretty fun too.

But it was the being together that was the best.  (Are these two not too cute?!  And yes, Ian played so hard, he wore his sock out. :))

Interview

As part of an Internet tag, I agreed to be interviewed by my cousin's wonderful wife, Alayna.  She has traveled the world, is smart, talented, accomplished, & beautiful.  And she asks great interview questions.  So if you'd like to be interviewed by me, leave a comment & your email address (if I don't have it) and I'll send you 5 interview questions to post, along with your answers, on your blog. :)  This was really a lot of fun.  Enjoy!

1) You have four beautiful kids, a husband, a house, a cute dog, and a huge church calling.  What is your secret to managing it all?

Well, I wish I knew what the secret was!!!  There are a lot of mom's I know of whom I'd like to ask the same question.  What I often wonder is why I didn't accomplish more when I only had one child, or two children.  Knowing how busy I am now makes me wonder what I did with the extra time I must have had. :)  Although I'm not serving in Relief Society anymore, I think the things that kept us going during that time (which was an incredibly demanding time) are the same things that keep us going on a daily basis these days too.  First, the Lord blesses us.  In big ways and small ways.  He helps me have the strength to do what needs to be done.  Second, I married well.  Besides all Cory does to provide for the family (which is a big deal) he's a great husband and father.  I know how much he loves me and loves our kids by all the ways he serves us and pitches in wherever he's most needed.  Whether its loading the dishwasher, changing a diaper or tucking a child into bed, he will do it all.  Without his help, I honestly cannot fathom how we'd make it. :)  Third, I think I try to have a sense of humor about things.  I can't say that always works, but it certainly helps.  I think Sister Hinckley said it best, when she said, "I can either laugh or cry and crying gives me a headache."  So I try to follow that advice and laugh, when I can.  There are days where I really feel like we're doing a good job and have things together and other days I'm sure we're destined for the loony bin.   But we just keep trying and keep moving forward and try to enjoy each other and enjoy our life as much as we can. :)  No matter how stressed I get sometimes (and I definitely do get stressed sometimes) I really do love this time in our life with lots of kids around and the busy-ness of it all.  I know that one day, I really am going to miss it.

2) Every child is different.  What surprised you most about your kids different personalities?  How are they alike? Different?

I think what has amazed me about my kids is how they came to me with distinct personalities and unique talents.  I'm always surprised by how early their individuality becomes apparent.  There are ways they are alike, though.  They definitely have physical characteristics that link them to our little family.  I think they are all well-behaved and have good manners.  They are also really tender-hearted and protective of one another.  There is definitely an innate difference between the girls and Ian.  I remember when Elise and Ian were small & they were playing Barbies together.  Elise was brushing their hair, fixing their clothes and lining them up for a picnic.  Ian had them in the air, flying them around like airplanes.  They are just different!  They definitely have their own personalities.

Elise is super dependable.  She has a great memory and if she has put something somewhere or has just seen something around, she can almost always remember where it is or where she saw it.  She loves animals.  She is a peacemaker.  She is so kind to others, never wanting to hurt another person's feelings.  One of her strengths is making the right choice and doing the right thing no matter what.  She isn't afraid to stand up for what she knows is right, even if it isn't the easy thing to do.  She's spunky and fun to be around.

Ian is full of energy.  Sometimes I think I can just feel the energy humming off of him.  He's very innocent and unassuming in a lot of ways.  He loves to hug and kiss Cory & I and his sisters.  He also has a lot of physical coordination.  He never hits his sisters.  No matter how much they may aggravate him sometimes, he never ever retaliates by hitting, kicking or punching.  He's also very good with technology.  I taught him once how to get to the ring tones on my phone.  You have to push about 6 different buttons, choosing different items from different menus.  He remembered each step after only showing him once.

Merry Grace has a lot of personality.  She's very independent and wants to do things on her own.  She is really, really funny and keeps us laughing a lot.  She has a contagious laugh that often we all find ourselves laughing along with her, just because she's laughing.  She's also very, very motherly for her age.  She loves doing "mommy duties" with Paige and also her baby dolls.  She loves helping me with whatever task I am doing--cooking, laundry, dishes, making the bed--whatever it is, she will be right there helping.  She also loves to go places.  If someone is leaving in the car, you can be sure she wants to ride along.

Paige is still really small, so we're just seeing her personality emerge.  She's certainly a happy, content baby.  She smiles like no other, at anyone who will notice her.  She loves attention and loves to be talked to and played with. She is super patient and loving.  I can't wait to see what develops as she gets older.

As I thought about each of the kids, I thought about how each person's personality adds and contributes to our family life.  Each person's strengths and abilities make our family better and more complete.  We interact better when we're all together.  I think we're all happiest when we're all together. :)

3) If you had one day where your kids were taken care of, your husband was content, and you had no chores to do, how would you spend it?

I would definitely spend it on the beach with a good book.  I would stay from sun-up to sun-down, as those are some of the best times on the beach.  I just love being on the beach.  I love dosing off in the warm sun (impossible to do with kids) or dragging my chair to the edge of the waves to cool me off.  I don't know what it is about being on the beach that just makes life seem better.

4) How has being raised in the South affected your personality?  Do you think you would be a different person if you grew up somewhere else?

I love having grown up in the South.  I definitely have a healthy dose of Southern pride.  I think I'm friendlier for having grown up here.  I also think the characteristics I value in others has a lot to do with where I was born and how I was raised.  My roots in the South go way back, too.  Both sides of my family are Southern as far back as I can trace.  The sights, sounds and smells that are wonderful and familiar to me have a lot to do with Southern cooking and Southern hospitality.  I love the song "Where I'm From" by Jason Michael Carroll.  I think the choruses really nail some of what I love about being from the south.  It goes:

"I'm from the front pew of a wooden white church,
The courthouse clock it still
don't work,
Where a man's word means everything.
Where moms and dads were high school flames,
Gave their children grandmothers maiden name.
Yes it may not sound like much,
But its where I'm from.

Where the quarterback dates the homecoming queen,
The truck's a ford and the tractor's green.
And Amazing Grace is what we sing.
Where there's a county fair every fall,
And your friends are there no matter when you call
Yeah It may not sound like much but it's
Where I'm from."

I'm sure I would be a little different if I had been raised somewhere else, although the most meaningful parts of who I am, I feel like come from being raised a member of the church.  And while I think its being around family that means the most about where you live, I love the South and don't ever want to live anywhere else.

5) How did you and Corey meet, and how do you guys find time for each other?

Cory & I met at EFY when I was 16 and he was about a month away from leaving on his mission.  My best friend was in the same group as he was and while getting a drink of water during the first dance, she introduced the two of us.  I remember thinking he had the bluest eyes I'd ever seen and he said, "Save me a dance."  That's what started it all. :)  We wrote while he was on his mission, I graduated from high school in June and he came home July and we actually went on our first date.  We dated for a year before we got married, and here we are almost 10 years later.  It is really hard to find time together sometimes.  The best thing is that we try to go on a date at least a couple of times a month, more if we can manage.  We trade off baby-sitting with Cory's siblings which is a lifesaver.  Once a week we sit down and talk about how we're doing as a couple, how we're doing as parents and what our kids might need.  That is a really nice way to just touch base about how our family is doing.  The other thing is that we really try to have fun together, which Cory gets a lot of credit for.  He's just fun to be around so he makes everything more fun, whether its cooking dinner together, folding laundry, watching the tarheels play basketball, or work in the yard.  I think the more time that passes, the more amazed I am by his many talents and the more gratitude I feel that he's my husband.  I'm definitely one lucky gal!

Qualities to Look For

Not too long ago, Elise and her cousin were writing and Elise wrote this list of qualities she is looking for in a husband.

Charming, well mannered, handsome, missionary, nice, brave, cheers for UNC, sweet, goes to church, chews with mouth closed, nice to other people, close to your age...I think she's off to a great start with this list.  I hope one day she finds him. :)

Egg Toss

Is there anything more fun than cracking an egg?  I had two eggs that needed to be thrown out and Ian--literally--threw them out for me.  I can only hope it wasn't so much fun that I end up short a dozen eggs in the morning. :)

In other Ian shenanigans, yesterday he managed to stop up two toilets within a 5 minute period.  One was able to be unstopped with just a little plunging.  The other one was impacted with toilet paper.  And--of course--he had flushed it at least twice, causing it to overflow all over the bathroom floor.  And--of course--it was so impacted that I had to reach down in the toilet and unclog it with my hands.  Ugh.  It had overflown into the trashcan next to the toilet, so that was a nasty mess to clean up.  It took a bit to clean up that little incident.  My consolation was that their was no poopy in the toilet I had to stick my hands in.  Thank goodness for the little things. :)

The Cereal Thing

As I mentioned in the prevous post, Paige had her first taste of "real" food last week.  If, by any stretch of the imagination, rice cereal can be called "real" anything.  Either way, we whipped  her up a bowl and got her started.  I'd be surprised if she even swallowed a teaspoon total, and while she didn't seem excited about it, she didn't hate it either.  She just seemed puzzled by the whole process.  Each of the kids took a turn feeding her a bite, especially Merry Grace who I lovingly refer to as Mom #2.

I believe she got the spoon in quite far enough.  :)

Elise is such a great helper.  What in the world would we do without her?!

I believe he had the technique down quite well.

The happy eater, proudly displaying how well she could spit out everything that went into her mouth.  At that, she was a pro!

All About Paigie Poo

The big kids around here get lots of press, so I thought it was Paige's turn for a little attention. (Not that she's lacking in that department, but you get the idea. :))  So here are some of my favorite pictures of Baby Paige.

She is just dang cute.  She smiles more than any baby I have ever seen.  Maybe I'm funnier than I used to be (or funnier looking.)  Maybe there are more people around to make her smile than ever before.  Either way, she's got a big, bright, beautiful smile and is getting lots of practice using it.

So here is Miss Paige, happy as a clam, while I was folding laundry.  She was sitting in her bumbo, being entertained by flying clothes and Merry Grace.  Is that smile not the sweetest thing?

Paige is also spending time on the floor learning how to wiggle around, roll back and forth, get toys, put anything and everything in her mouth...oh yeah, and smile.

We gave Paigie a few spoonfuls of rice cereal the other day.  She was puzzled and unimpressed, but could still manage a smile for anyone willing to look. :)

Mid-diaper change, half naked--it doesn't matter.  She will still smile like nobody's business.  We love this little smiling cutie-pie to pieces.  Sometimes literally where the kids are concerned.  Some people might say she's spoiled.  We like to say she's "well-loved".  And she is. :)

Fashionista

I'm hoping this picture illustrates the sorts of fashion catastrophes we have to deal with with this little young'un.  But, daggone it, she sure is cute. :)

Sunday Morning Craziness

I'm sure I've written before about what a challenge Sunday mornings are sometimes (i.e. all the time.)  Yesterday was no different.  In the spirit of true confessions, I didn't get up early enough to make the morning as smooth as it could have been.  In fact, I slept in and then procrastinated getting up.  As much as I would love to blame someone else, that is completely my fault.  Things just disintegrated into chaos from there on out.  I bought Ian a new dress shirt with a neck tie because very often he looks thrown away when he walks into church.  He doesn't like "regular" Sunday clothes and up until now have let him get away with polo's and outfits (admittedly) much worse.  So getting him to wear his new button up shirt was a nightmare, mainly for Cory.  I'm pretty sure he whined about how itchy his shirt was for a solid 15 minutes, interspersed with cries, foot stomping and attempts and unbuttoning.  Once he realized that some of his much coveted computer privileges would be taken away if he took his shirt off or continued his shenanigans, his tirade miraculously stopped and he went to church looking handsome and without another complaint.  Amazing!!!  (He did not tuck in the shirt, though, but at that point it was not a battle worth fighting.)

In the meantime, Merry Grace decided since both Elise & I were wearing skirts that she should too.  So we found a black skirt she could wear and a cute red and white polka-dotted shirt.  This little gal has her own style, which includes layering, sometimes as many as 5 shirts at a time.  Unfortunately we couldn't find an acceptable shirt for her to wear underneath the red one and after much ado, she took the whole outfit off and ended up in the same dress she wears each week.  Never mind the fact that she has probably 10 nice dresses in her closet (thanks to her big sister and older cousins).  Oh well.  Of course there were the typical tasks of hair fixing, teeth brushing, make-up, baby feeding and so on.  We were finally more or less ready to go out the door, late of course, when we realized that only Merry Grace had eaten breakfast (although she vehemently denied it.)  Have I mentioned that Ian will sometimes throw up if he doesn't eat breakfast?  So we had to make sure he got something to eat.  By the time we finally got in the van (after another round with Merry Grace over a "small jacket"--her words--to wear outside) the baby's car seat was in the wrong car and had to be moved.  At long last we arrived at church, considerably late at this point, quite frazzled and completely worn out.  We didn't arrive perfectly, we didn't arrive on time, but we arrived.  So I'm going with an A+ for perseverance and a firm committment to wake up earlier next week! :)

Sweet Baby Paige

I had some other things I was going to post about, but they're all taking more time that I want to devote this morning.  So instead, here's a picture of cute little Paige.

She is just the cutest, sweetest thing ever.  She is getting really attached to me.  She is fine with Cory holding her, but if she sees me nothing will do but for her to get to me.  She will start wriggling, squirming and fussing until I take her.  (Which I not-so-secretly love.)  She also wants me to be the one to pick her up from her nap.  A friend of mine, who has a baby a few weeks younger than Paige mentioned this with her little boy.  Even when Cory picks her up sometimes, you can see her looking around, trying to find me.  She loves to grin when we talk to her and loves the kids to play with her.

They are all very attentive to her, in different ways.  Elise holds her the most, and is a huge help when she's not in school.  She can hold her while I get dinner going or get a few housework items done that require two hands to accomplish.  Elise is very protective and responsible.

Ian kisses her like no other.  He always has a smooch for her cheek and often cannot walk past her without giving her one of his signature big, wet kisses--even if she is sound asleep and his kiss will wake her up.  And heaven help us if she gets tired of playing on her blanket with her toys or wants out of her bumbo.  The minute she starts to fuss, Ian practically demands her needs be met.  He doesn't like for her to cry at all.

And of course, there's Merry Grace.  She thinks she's Paige's other Mommy.  I have to watch out for her, because if Paige is laying on her blanket, its not unusual that Merry Grace will decide Paige needs a diaper change or a new outfit and often takes matters into her own hands.  She loves doing all those "mommy" activities and is so cute doing it, even if she doesn't get the diaper taped on just right or the snaps of an outfit put together in just the right way.  She's surprisingly efficient for one her age.

I think the facetious question my pediatrician asked one day when I'd brought the whole crew with me for Paige's check-up says it best.  After glancing at the older kids and then at Paige he asked, "Well, is she getting any attention?"  I think the answer is a resounding "Yes!" :)

I am a killjoy

Yes, I am a killjoy. A fun-sucker, a wet blanket, a party pooper and a stick in the mud. I will not let my kids do anything. I will not let them pour sand all over the trampoline and then jump on it. I will not let them use the book "The One in the Middle is the Green Kangaroo" or "Charlotte's Web" or any other such reading material as a notebook. They are for reading, not writing. I will not let them draw all over their arms with a permanent marker, no matter how pretty it looks. I will not let them throw a football at the ceiling fan. I will not let them skip a bath because they like to be dirty. I will not let them blow bubbles on the carpet. I will not let them stick things in the electrical outlets. I will not let them paint the bathroom floor or the carpet with nail polish. I will not let them use my glass vases as targets for their dart guns. Apparently these are the only things on the fun list and since they can't do any of them they cannot have any fun. So, unfortunately, I have rained on their parade. Maybe tomorrow will be more fun. :)

Around Here

I think kids are so funny and silly.    Last night Elise lost another tooth.  Merry Grace wanted one of her teeth pulled so badly she cried herself to sleep because we wouldn't pull one of them.  Seriously, what can you do about that?  She is one determined little girl. :)

The other day I was  talking to my brother about a situation and I described something as annoying.  Since Elise was nearby and I didn't want her to know what I was saying I spelled a-n-n-o-y-i-n-g really fast, thinking she wouldn't put it together that way.  After I got done with my sentence, Elise goes, "You said it was annoying.  I can spell, you know."

This morning I was taking a shower when Ian had to poopy.  We have a rule with him that he needs to use one wet wipe and then one wipe with toilet paper.  As he was taking care of business he said, "Did you know that sometimes I just pretend to wipe off with toilet paper and then use another wet wipe because they work much better?"  Actually I had no idea about this, but it cracked me up.  Oh well.  So much for our great idea.

One day last week, Ian and Merry Grace were eating a snack.  Apparently the snack wasn't entertaining enough, because this is what they ended up doing.  I would just love to know the thought process that led to this. :)

Cory bought these sticker things to use on something he was working on.  He ended up not needing them, and Ian took matters into his own hands.  I'm so glad he had $3.00 worth of fun here.  The best part is that when he took them off he stuck them to the kitchen table and it took goof off and quite a bit of elbow grease to get it off.

Paige isn't up to much mischief these days.  She is just cute as a button all the time.  She can scoot/roll around on the floor a little bit.  She loves grasping onto things with her hands.  She loves falling asleep holding onto a blanket, the edge of my t-shirt, a stuffed animal, or anything else she can get her hands on.  And of course she has her thumb popped right in her mouth.  She also has fun in her bumbo.  She thinks she's much bigger than she really is.  This is where she hangs out when I am working in the kitchen.  Even being cute all the time can wear you out.  Could you not just EAT her up? :)
