The Playground

The other weekend, we went back to my hometown for my "little" brother's Eagle Court of Honor.  When we first got into town, we went to the playground at my elementary school.  It was fun to show the kids where I went to school and share some memories with them.  Some of my favorite playground equipment wasn't there anymore (namely the merry-go-round and the slide down the hill) but it was still fun.

It was a fun, nice day to be outside--and those days have been hard to come by this winter, so we have to enjoy them while we can. :)

A Few Pictures

Elise is learning to cook.  She is really good at it and its a big help to us.

Here's an egg she cooked for breakfast the other morning.  She loved that it looked like it had eyes and a mouth. :)

Paige dressed up in her Halloween costume again and went around growling at everyone.  Too bad she's mostly just cute and not really very scary.  But we're all very good at pretending. :)

Ally came over to play again and the girls got all fancy.  These girls are just so girly and I love it! :)

Paigie loves her lipstick.  Scratch that.  She loves my lipstick.  But its hard to say "no" to someone who's so dang cute.  Lipstick and all.

Cory made muffins for breakfast one morning and Paige licked the bowl clean.  Literally.  That's some good stuff.

And Paige is also a big help with shaving cream.  :)  Thanks, Uncle Adam.

Man, I have cute kids! :)

Cute Comments

The other morning I did something helpful for Ian.  He was really grateful and said, "Thanks, Mommy!!!  You're one of the best Mommies I've ever had!!!"  I hadn't realized I was in competition with anyone for this position, but at least I'm way up there. :)  I love that he gave me props, but still gave me room to improve.  Gives me something to strive for. ;)

Merry Grace is my one who loves to go.  She loves going to the store, to someone's house, the library or anywhere else that she can.  Yesterday we had a lot of errands which, frankly, wore me out.  On the way home she said, "Today was the best day ever!"   Too bad I can't just send her out to run the errands for me. :)  But I'm glad she had fun just being together.

Cory, of course, is raising our kids to be true Tarheels.  So far, he's succeeded nicely.  This morning, Paige, who is learning to pray on her own, blessed two things:  Grandma Dee-Dee and Carolina, which she blessed twice. :)

Elise was going to church the other night with Cory for her activity and he to Cubs (he's the Cubmaster).  He told her that night was pack meeting.  She said, "Why do you have to call it 'Pack' meeting?  I wish you'd call it 'Ram Meeting'!"

Love these cute kids. :)

Paigie, Paigie Puddin' Pop

This girl is a mess.  A silly, willy, cute and cuddly, lovable little mess!
We had done this wave thing to Elise's hair before she went to school.  Paige didn't want to be left out, so we did hers too.  Gotta be just like the big kids, right? :)

And then there was last night, while I was cooking dinner.  She was gluing buttons and sequins onto a piece of paper.  I knew she was using too much glue, but she was happy working on her little project, so I just let her use what she wanted.  I looked over just a few seconds later (remember, she was at the table just a few feet away!!!) and she was smearing Elmer's glue all over her arm like it was lotion.  This conveniently happened while someone was over fixing a leak in our bathroom, so the water was turned off.  Its a little hard to see since it dries clear, but her arm was covered, as was some of her tummy and chest.  I'm just glad it wasn't super glue.  We have  had that happen before. :)  And if you'll notice, her hair is pulled up in an elastic because she squirted handsoap all in it...again, while the water was off.  Thankfully, the leak got fixed and she got a good scrubbing down before bedtime.  What a funny girl she is! :)

Why its Good to Have a Dad...

I was making cookies in the kitchen the other evening when the kids and their Daddy started playing baseball in the living room.  Does this seem like a good idea to you? :)

They were using a foam sword as a bat and wiffle balls the size of ping pong balls, so that made it a little more safe.  After watching Ian hit balls, I did institute the rule that Cory was the only one who could be in the "line of fire" so to speak--all other children had to be out of the way.  (Seems so obvious, right?)  It really is cold outside these days and it gets dark so early, its hard to get much practice time in, so apparently this was the best solution they could come up with. :)  I'm thinking this is one of those times having all brothers really comes in handy, so I can be calmer about these types of things.  However, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have come up with this game on my own.  How lucky these kids are to have a dad like Cory.

Coincidence?

I'm beginning to think its not a coincidence that Paigie always "happens" to be around when I'm making cookies.  What do you think? :)

The Cutest Performer!

Elise, along with a group of 4th and 5th graders from her school were asked to sing at the town's Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration.  They practiced at school the last week or two and performed today.  Talk about cute. :)
They were supposed to wear jeans and a white long-sleeved shirt that was tucked in.  Elise was not happy about tucking in her shirt.  I thought she looked adorable, but that's no surprise.

I let her wear some of my earrings and necklace to make up for the tucked-in shirt.

She had to be there an hour early to practice and then perform, so I stayed home with the little ones while her Daddy took her.  And of course we had to photograph this momentous occasion.  (And everyone was annoyed thrilled to have their picture taken.:))

And cute little Merry Grace, in an act of camaraderie, tucked in her shirt, too.  And jumped in the picture.  Now that's moral support!

And then we got everyone in the photo.  And Paige gave her best smile.  Okay, she gave a great big scowl because she wanted to be right in front.

But the kids and Daddy got her to smile after all. :)  And this just became my new favorite picture.

And here's the proof that she was wonderful, as we knew she would be. :)

Little Things

There's a lady that works in the office at the kids' school.  She is very efficient and good at what she does.  She's just a "matter-of-fact" kind of person.  She can even come off as a little sharp or gruff sometimes.  Not that she's really that way, just how she can seem sometimes, if you don't know her very well.

Rewind to a month or so ago.  I had just barely come home from the hospital.  I can't remember where everyone was or what they were doing, but just Cory, Paige and I were at home.  Cory was exhausted, having not gotten much sleep the last few nights and Paige was worn out too and feeling pitiful.  The two of them were settling in for a nap and I decided to go get my prescriptions that were ready to be picked up.  Cory tried to convince me to just stay home, but I was sure I could handle just going to the pharmacy.  Almost all the time I go through the drive-through to drop off or pick up medicines, but that day I decided to go in.  On my way out, this lady from the kids' school was coming in.  She stopped me and asked how I was doing, having heard about our situation from the kids' teachers, I'm sure.  And then she told me her story of loss, having lost her first two children, one in the same way we did and another was a late term stillbirth.  What a blessing it was to have her share her experience with me.  I felt like here was someone who really knew what I was experiencing and could relate to me and my feelings and situation.  We chatted for a minute, shared a few thoughts, feeling and tears before hugging and heading our separate ways.

I had to go into the office at school one day this week and had just a minute to chat with her again.  In just a few words, I again felt refreshed, knowing there was someone else who really got it.  What I felt even more than anything was knowing that that day picking up my prescriptions, that this sweet lady had been put in my path to help and comfort me.  She's someone who I would likely not have known beyond the "Hi" and "Hello" of school comings and goings.  And yet now when I see her, its like seeing someone who knows just a little piece of my heart.

Another recent experience was with my doctor at my check-up.  She was the one who had to deliver the first news that there was something seriously wrong with our little guy.  She had been tireless in her desire to arm us with as much information and counsel and guidance as any one person could.  She devoted all the time in the world to us and we were so grateful.  Again, at my check-up, she was wonderful as we discussed different aspects of this situation and what it might or might not mean for the future.  But the one thing that stood out more than anything was when she said, "You have four beautiful children...no...you have five beautiful children..."  That is exactly how I feel and I'm forever grateful to her for recognizing that.

Not long before Christmas, two dear friends came over and brought lunch and just visited with me for a while.  We're all busy and don't have nearly the time to "just visit", but that day we did.  It was so fun to catch up and visit and reconnect.  The visit was so much fun and wonderful.  After they left, I looked in the goody bag they'd brought and found, among other things, a beautiful gold angel to hang on my tree.  It had a note with it that said, "Just remembering your little angel this Christmas and always."  Insert happy tears. I will always remember.  How wonderful to know there are others who remember too.

Thanks heavens for Someone who sends earthly angels into our lives, even when we might not realize how much we need them.

A Few Pictures

Sweet little Ally came over to play one day recently.  She came with goodies--princess dresses for herself, Merry Grace and Paige and cupcakes she'd help make.

It was all a hit!  We had a tea party with cheese crackers, hot chocolate, lemonade and cupcakes.  Are those girls adorable or what?!

We'd also had cinnamon rolls for breakfast, but there were a few left over.  Paige got the pan off the cabinet and helped herself to all the icing.  Oh my, but she's a cutie. :)

I made chocolate chip cookies one evening and this little girl happened to be hanging around at just the right moment to get to lick the beater.  She LOVED it. :)

One of our recent family home evening activities was Twister.  We played a bunch of rounds.  It was hilarious.  :)  We laughed so hard!

I never posted any pictures from our house when it snowed.  It was beautiful and fun.  When I took these pictures, it was still snowing heavily and snowed for a good 3-4 more hours.  Perfection!!!

Ian got this magic trick book from my parents' house and there was this wig idea in it.  Elise followed the directions to a T and made this cool wig out of some of my old yarn.  They kids are what really makes it, though. :) (Do the poses just not kill you?!)

And this is just MG being cute. :)  Which is pretty much all the time and very easy for her to accomplish.  But still....

And there you have it.  A picture update! :)

True Love

Have you ever wondered what true love looked like?  For me, it looks like this:

Nope, its not about Paige loving the dog, or Max loving Paige.  Its about Max.  And his fur.

Saturday was kind of a rotten day for me.  There were some things that were beyond my control and some things that were in my control that I didn't handle too well.  Suffice it to say I was sort of a grouch.  (I know.  You're stunned. :))

Have you ever had days where everything makes your feel grumpy?  That was Saturday.  One thing that was causing me to feel grouchy was our cute little dog.  He was desperately in need of a bath and a haircut, among other things.  Well, my sweet husband (who also happened to have a very bad cold), gave the little guy a bath AND cut his fur.  And believe it or not, it wasn't because he loves Max, or giving dogs haircuts. (Again, I know you're stunned.)  He did it because he loves me.  And he was trying to make one part of my day just a little bit better.

Of course, it isn't about the dog, the haircut or any of the rest of it.  Its about showing love and thinking of someone else before yourself.  Boy, do I have a lot to learn!!!  Is it any wonder I love this man?

I really think not. :)

Painting the Town...

...or at least the stairs.

One day, right before Christmas, Cory was at work, while we were packing for trips, cleaning the house, and baking to our heart's content.  I mentioned to the kids that I wanted them to take a crib mattress from under one of the beds down to the basement.  I came into the kitchen just in time to catch the older three before they attempted a ride down the stairs, Home Alone style.  Unfortunately, they still sent the mattress flying down the stairs on its own.  Also, unfortunate was the fact that I'd left a nearly full gallon of Carolina Blue paint on the top step to take down on my next trip.  And, as luck would have it, the mattress caught the can and tipped it over, busted the lid off and then spilled baby blue paint all down the stairs and then puddled on the tile floor at the bottom.  I just stood there in stunned silence, completely unable to believe what I had just witnessed.  The two bright spots in all of this are that #1, the stairs are going down to the basement and are in a much less prominent place in our home then they could be.  And, #2, we are huge Carolina fans, so if some color paint had to spill, thank goodness it was Tarheel blue.

Instead of cleaning up the spilled paint on the stairs, I just quickly went through and painted them all light blue with the little bit of paint left in the can and what had already spilled on each stair.  And I swiped up most of the paint on the tile floor with plastic grocery sacks.  (Honestly, I have no idea how to clean up that amount of paint.  I didn't want to use anything "useful", like towels, because then they would be ruined.  So I settled on the plastic grocery bags.  It seemed to do the trick.)

So, a word to the wise:  Do not leave paint on the top stair, no matter how tempting it seems.  And if you're going to take a mattress downstairs, you doggone well better enjoy the ride. :)

Messes

One night before Christmas, I was getting ready for dinner out with some friends.  I had already gotten dressed and had given Paige a bath.  She was squeaky clean.  She was so clean, we'd only gotten her panties on, she wasn't even fully dressed yet.  I sent her to get a brush.  When she didn't come right back with it, I went to find her.  And boy, did I ever find her.

She found the brush, alright.  Right along with the diaper rash ointment.  By the time I found her, she had a nice coat over the majority of her body.  Oh wow!!!  And even after being wiped down by both parents, the next morning she stilled reeked of the cream.  So, sorry, ladies at dinner.  If you smelled "that sweet perfume" on me, it wasn't a new scent I was trying out--it was just lingering from the hugs and kisses sweet Paigie gave me before I left.  She was covered just about from head to toe, but you could still see her cuteness.  Thank goodness. :)
