For My Kids...

...I will do just about anything. As today proves. There was a program at Elise's school today. It was a big deal. The Mayor was there and a few other important people. They read a letter from the Governor. They recognized the teachers and students. All the students were decked out in school colors. And Elise was singing. Not just Elise, but the entire student body. And Elise wanted me to come to this program and watch her sing with the rest of her school. So I came. Nevermind that I had three other little kidlets tagging along with me. Never mind that it outside and the temperature was in the upper 80's or that with the stifiling humidity it felt like at least 110. Never mind that I was carrying Paige in my lovely baby carrier, so it was like holding a 98.6 degree heating pad next to my chest. Never mind that it was bright sunny and the program lasted an hour. Never mind that the only chairs they had were for the teachers so I and my three little munchkins had to stand up the whole time. Never mind any of it. It was important to Elise and I did it. And all to hear her sing for a total of 5 minutes. And believe it or not, I had a really good time. The program was really nice. I was proud of the school spirit everyone showed. I was glad to be there and show my support, if not for the school, at least for my little girl. And it didn't hurt at all that we all went and got ice cream afterwards, because I felt like we had all earned it. :)

The Funnies

Three funny things from the kids:

While riding in the car this afternoon, Elise had just finished telling me about a robbery at her school when we pulled up beside a firetruck assisting a fender bender at the stoplight. "Wow!!!", she said. "This is just the coolest day ever!!!"

Ian said the blessing on the food at dinnertime tonight. One line caused me to have to hold back a giggle or two: "And please bless all the dogs in the world." Wow. Looks like someone has a very busy night.

Merry Grace got in a silly mood today while video chatting with her Daddy during the day today and said, "You are poopy and I am so gonna flush you!"

Silly stuff, but those kids just make me laugh! I love it and I love them! :)

Secret Garden

I guess its not really a secret, but I have a garden again this year. It seems like I only have one every other year because I seem to either be pregnant or have a newborn in between years. So since Paige is no longer a newborn and I'm definitely not pregnant, I have a garden!!! I started in early April planting seeds in styrofoam cups to give the seeds a head start (and to save money on having to buy full-sized plants!!!). While they were doing their thing, I tilled up two different spots and when the plants were big enough, I planted them in the official garden. (**Side note, which is completely unrelated to this post: Whenever I say the word official, I always envision Cory teasing his mom at Camp Singletary, calling her the "Official Official." He says it in this sing-song voice, and it never fails to make me laugh. He was teasing her because of her penchant for deciding on rules for the games we play. Truly, truly funny. :)) Anyway, here are some pictures of the lovely little plants.

This is a little squash plant, about a month and a half ago.

The kids and Cory gave me two tomato plants for my birthday and lo and behold, there is already a tiny green tomato on the vine. How exciting!!!

I took these pictures this weekend. As you can see the plants are getting much bigger! I have mostly squash plants, a couple zuccini plants and one cucumber plant. In my other garden spot I have sugar snap peas, lettuce and brussel sprouts. I have some little pepper plants planted as well, but they are still pretty small. We've even been able to enjoy some of the lettuce I planted already. And if I can keep the caterpillars away, we should have some brussel sprouts pretty soon. Its been a lot of work, but Mother Nature has (thankfully) done most of the watering for me and the kids have helped me weed (although Merry Grace, in her zealous weeding, took out one of my heads of lettuce). Its been my best garden yet. Maybe next month I can post a picture of a chicken stir-fry, with veggies from the garden. My fingers are crossed!

Another Installment of Why My Kids Don't Need Toys

Sometimes I just wish I could have back all the money we've spent on toys over the years. And this is why...

When I was watching Charles Allen the other day, he and Ian spent at least 30 minutes climbing this tree in the front yard. They had the best time!

Then, on Saturday, the kids filled up this little outdoor firepit with water and spent at least an hour jumping in it and over it. Such fun. Definitely more fun than cabbage patch doll we got several year ago, totally more fun than the power ranger helmet Ian got for Christmas, and way more fun than the little people play set from several years back. Among other things. Next year I'm filling their stockings with imagination. Its free and much more fun!!!

What the Kiddos are Up to

I forget how busy this time of year can be. We've been running around like crazy this last month, but its been fun.

Even with all the end of year activities, Elise has still managed to squeeze in a little fun.

Softball season is coming to an end, but we have had a GREAT time cheering on Elise and her team. She has improved every year and is so much fun to watch. These warm spring evenings at the ballpark are wonderful!

These two kids have a great time together during the day, while Elise is in school. Merry Grace is a willing recruit for Ian's escapades. These pictures would be even cuter if they weren't taken on the top of my minivan again!!!

And Paige mostly spends her days being cute, being loved on by the older kids (or trying to escape from their "love" as the case may be), crawling around like a big girl and pulling up on every piece of furniture we own. She eats like a pro, is sleeping amazingly well, is cute and snuggly and a joy to be around.

Why We Will Not Be Buying a Jungle Gym Anytime Soon...

Because there is no need to. Maybe we should just plant another tree instead.

Odds and Ends

As I've mentioned at least a hundred times, the kids love helping with Paige. Sometimes its super helpful, like when they cheer her up if she's sad, make her laugh, entertain her or hold her. Other times its way more work to let them be involved--like when they try to feed her. Obviously, Elise is the neatest, but it just goes downhill from there. I think it would be just as effective to take the jar of sweet potatoes and dump them on Paige's head, as it would be to let the kids feed her. But I let them do it anyway, at least sometimes. Here's a video of Merry Grace feeding Paige a bite of cereal. The funniest part is that she's singing this little rhyme to her as she feeds her each bite, but she gets it all mixed up. It's a cross between about three different rhymes. But its cute and Paige doesn't seem to mind a bit. In fact, I think she loves it! :)

In other Merry Grace related items, she loves jelly toast. Only she thinks that jelly is called "peanutbutterjelly", and calls it that, as one word. It's pretty cute. :) But please don't actually try to put peanut butter on it. Heaven forbid!

This past week was my birthday. Happy 29th to me! I love birthdays and this one was no exception. Cory blew up lots of balloons for decorations, I didn't have to cook a single meal all day, and I got some neat presents from the kids and Cory and others. It was a great day and I enjoyed every minute of it. The only bad part about a birthday is that it is only one day. :) I signed up for lots of free things that different restaurants offer on your birthday. So I have a busy week ahead of me, as I try to get all my free stuff. :)

Mother's Day

For most people, May 14, 1980 was just another day. But for me, it was the day I was born to the best mother in the world. Really, though, I think my mom should have won an award for what it took to get me here. Cue the morning sickness, aversion to smells (including the house she lived in), lots of puking, along with all the other joys of pregnancy. Add to that an almost 3-day labor (literally), followed by a lot of pushing, followed--at long last--by a c-section. Really, now. Where is the fun in that? But my mom did it willingly. And most surprisingly of all, she did it three more times after having me, by then knowing full well what she was getting into. She did all this while finishing her bachelor's degree, working a part-time job for a while, and supporting my dad while he also finished college and began his accounting career.

My mom is the kind of mom who doesn't call attention to herself. She quietly goes about her everyday life, without fanfare and without show. In fact, a lot that she does goes unnoticed because she doesn't call attention to it. She makes mothering seem much easier than it really is.
She instilled in me a love of reading and learning. She read, re-read and then read again the same bedtime stories over and over again. She read to me at night, even when I'm sure she'd have liked nothing more than some peace and quiet after I was asleep. She let me read about as much as I wanted, even though it meant my utter absorption in that book to the exclusion of all else, chores or conversation included. She encouraged me to do my best in school. She let me try almost every extracurricular activity that I wanted to, to see what things I loved and what things I didn't. I took tennis lessons, piano lessons, gymnastics, went to computer camp, band camp and probably a hundred other things here or there. Some of those things I enjoy to this day and others I hated with a passion, but am still grateful for the opportunity she gave me to try them.

And throughout all this, she taught me about who I really am. She taught me about Heavenly Father, about my purpose here on earth, about right from wrong and about the gospel that I hold so dear today. The first memory I have of feeling the Spirit was sitting at her knees. Her dad, my grandfather, had passed away when I was only two, and this particular time she was sharing her testimony of the plan of salvation and how she knew that she would see her Dad again. Then she played the song, "I Feel My Savior's Love", a song that had been sung at his funeral, on an old tape recorder. And I knew that she knew it was true and so did I. She encouraged my growing testimony and helped me choose the right. Even though sometimes I might have rolled my eyes at something she said or did or given a sassy reply to something important she said, I was listening and it helped shape my life then and now.

My mom encouraged my siblings and I to love each other and look out for one another. She created strong family ties and bonds between each of us. I always knew that family was something I could count on. Now that we're getting older, my brothers are my friends and my support system. I always knew my parents loved me and that they were proud of me. I knew that no matter what other people accomplished, they thought what I did was great and wonderful and that I did the most amazing things that had ever been done. I was good enough just the way I was. In fact I was great. :)

My sister-in-law posted this quote on her blog the other day that describes my mom perfectly.

Thank heaven for women of faith in our lives. A woman of faith loves the Lord. She wants Him to know it by the life she lives, by the words she speaks, by the service she renders to His children, by her every action. She knows that He loves her even though she is imperfect and still trying to be better. She knows that when she does her very best, that it is enough, as President Hinckley has told us. ~Margaret D. Nadauld

Only I'm not sure that she knows that what she has done for me and my brothers enough--its better than enough. In fact, its nothing short of miraculous. I know that even more clearly now that I have my own children and try to be a good mother to them. So many times I fall short of where I want to be and I hope and pray that they will be kind and forgiving of the places I don't measure up and know that I'm doing my best and keep trying to be better. I know my mom wasn't perfect, because no mother can be. But she's perfect enough. When I think of all the many things she accomplished in her life, her real legacy is through the lives of her children--the children she sacrificed so much of herself to raise. But it hasn't gone unnoticed--not to us children who benefited from her goodness, and not to the many future generations of children who will be blessed because of who she is and what she stands for.

So Happy Mother's Day, Mama. Even if it is almost a week late. I would have written it sooner, but I was busy being a Mom. I love you!

Baptism

After much preparation, anticipation and excitement, Elise was baptized on Saturday.  What a big day this was for her!  We were so happy for her, for making this big decision and mostly for being the wonderful girl that she is and is becoming.  We had lots of family in town for the big day, which made it all the more special.  There could be no doubt in Elise's mind that she is loved by many, many people.  The outpouring of love we felt was really wonderful.  And the help that everyone provided was amazing.  I cannot even imagine how we could have pulled the day off without all the help from our family.  Elise chose those she would like to speak, sing and give prayers, and she chose well.  Every part of the program was perfect and (almost) went off without a hitch.  (There was the part where Uncle Adam and Uncle Logan had to run out to the store and buy a cable to hook up the TV and laptop so that we could show a video we put together for Elise, but even that worked out in the end.)  There were so many wonderful experiences throughout the day, but there was one moment for me that stands out in my mind.  Elise and I had a moment, just the two of us, while I helped her change from her pretty white dress, into her actual baptismal gown.  I only had a few minutes, but I was able to give her a big hug and kiss and tell her that even though she was a little nervous, it would be wonderful...and then send her through the door, into the font.  It was one of those times where I felt like my heart was bursting with love for her and yet there was a tug at the heartstrings, because I was "letting her go".  I could clearly see how I'd prepared her for this moment and then let her go on her own.   But it was a moment and a memory I'll always cherish.  Here are some pictures from the big day. :)

Happy Birthday, Dah-ling...

I have a to-do list a mile long today, but I just can't let the day pass without making mention of a very special event...Elise's 8th Birthday!!!  This birthday has come with much fanfare, much anticipation and much preparation.  As most of you probably know, in our church, a child is eligible for baptism when he or she turns eight years old.  So in the months leading up to this big birthday, we have been talking, teaching and learning.  And Saturday is the big day, but today, we just celebrate the birth of the sweetest little girl I know.

Elise is the child who has to endure my feeble attempts at parenting.  She's the one we try all our new tricks on--the ones that work and the ones that don't.  It can be hard being the oldest, when each new milestone is not only new for you, but new for the parents figuring it out too.  When we're having a hard time, I remind Elise that this is the first time she's done (whatever the thing may be) that this is also the first time I've been a parent in this situation.  So I'm learning too.  She's also such a great kid that a lot of the time I'm fooled into thinking I have things figured out.  And then, as I struggle to find a way to give her a good foundation and yet wings to fly on her own, I realize how much I have to learn.  I'm so proud of all Elise has accomplished and look forward to the many things she has ahead of her in the future.   Most of all, I feel profound gratitude and humility for the opportunity to be her Mother.  So "Happy Birthday" to the sweetest, sassiest, funnest, loveliest, happiest, bestest eight year old in the world!

At 5 months old..

At 2 years old...

At 4 years old...

At 6 years old...

And, in the blink of an eye, just last month, almost 8 years old.  Its been a crazy, fast, wild, but most of all wonderful ride.  I love this little girl!

Toothpaste, anyone?

Most Sundays our kids and their cousins want to get together after church.   Yesterday was no different.  So Charles Allen tagged along with us, while Elise went home with Emmy.  Those boys were definitely up to mischief yesterday, but they're boys, so its to be expected.  My brother, Adam, lives with us and works with Cory, but often goes back home on the weekends.  That was true this weekend, but he had left most of his clothes and things here at the house.  While the kids were outside playing, Cory was taking something into the room Adam stays in.  "Hey, Kristen," he hollered from the room, "Are you missing a tube of toothpaste?"  Sure enough, those kids (including Merry Grace, who can certainly hold her own with those boys) had squirted out a tube of toothpaste onto the nightstand and then tried to wipe it up with one of Adam's shirts.  Nice.  I'm sure that's just what Adam wanted--a minty fresh shirt.  Of course, we put it right into the laundry and gave the kids a little talking to.  Shortly after Adam came in from work this afternoon, he hollered out to me, "Are you by any chance missing a tube of toothpaste?"  Again?  Apparently they had not only squirted the toothpaste out onto the nightstand, but had also opened up Adam's suitcase full of clothes and squeezed toothpaste all over the clothes.  What can I say?   Crazy kids.  What made them think of doing that?  Oh well.  Thank goodness they're cute and can help with laundry.  They have quite a bit to do tomorrow.

I'm Getting Old

This is for you, Mrs. Harman (a.k.a. my biggest fan), in case you check the blog tonight.  You'll have something new to read. :)

Aging is a funny thing.   Somehow, even though its been almost a decade since I was a teenager, I still don't think of myself as much older than 20.  But I am.  In fact, I'll turn 29 in only a couple of weeks.  My last year of 20's.  And I'm ok with that.  Most of the time, I'm pretty satisfied with my place in life, where I am and what I've accomplished.  Most of the time I feel like I'm improving myself and becoming a better person, however slowly, and that makes me feel good about my age, too.  But, while I may still imagine myself as 20, my body does not look 20.  These boobs that have nursed 4 children do not look the way they did 10 years ago.  Not by a long shot.  And the crows feet that are creeping out around the corners of my eyes would never be found on someone a decade younger.  I have a small patch of gray hairs on the left side of my head.  I have a few spider veins around my knees.  Things are saggier, baggier, achier and wrinklier.  I know, I know.  Its not really that bad.  I'm still a twenty-something.  Waaah-waaaah, cry me a river, right?  But I can't help but notice that my body is changing.  And most of the time, that's okay too.  There are times when I just want to throttle someone, though.  Not too long ago, my brother, Adam (who is 8 years my junior), and I were shopping at Wal-Mart.  I was getting a few things, so was he.  So I paid for my groceries, only to realize I'd forgotten graham crackers.  He said I could just add them to his tab, so Merry Grace & I took off and dashed across the store to get the graham crackers.  As we were racing back, the cashier was ringing up the last of the items and Adam started to scan his debit card.  "Wait,"she said, "Don't you need to wait for you mom to get back with the graham crackers?"  *Okay*  This is me now.  What in the heck?!  His mother?!  Do you honestly think I look old enough to have a 21 year old son?!  Are you kidding me?  Lucky for her, I have a well-honed sense of humor.  Otherwise, I could have been the headline on the local newsstand.

A Lot of Pictures...But Oh-So-Cute

There are a lot of pictures in this post, so scroll through if you'd like or skip it altogether.  At the very least, consider yourself warned. :)  (Oh yeah, and there's a new post below, in case a short paragraph is more your speed.)

We love the warmer temps.  The kids love playing out there and I love being outdoors, watching them.  Its so nice.  Paige likes it too.  And now that she can crawl really well, the yard is a whole new world for her to explore.  Here's she after her mama with the camera. :)

A girl and her jeep...this girls loves to drive around the yard in this.  How cute is she?!

Ian got a skateboard for Christmas and it has been a big hit.  He's actually getting really good at it, which scares me a little.  I think I may have liked it better when he was riding it down the hill on his bottom.  But he sure is proud.

These pictures crack me up.  Merry Grace is a horrible driver.  Really, really bad.  That means she gets stuck a lot and cannot figure out how to get unstuck.  Luckily, she has a very kind brother who will come to her rescue.  The best part is that she's pushing the gas pedal while he steers.  I LOVE it!!!  And when she's all set, he goes back to what he was doing until the next time she gets stuck.  Now that is a superhero! :)

Here is our little softball star.  Elise is doing great this year, really grasping some new concepts and getting great hits.  We love going to her games and cheering her on.  Warm nights at the ballpark...is there anything better?

*Sigh*  This is why my car is crap.  Sorry, there's no other word for it, or I would have used it.  I was cooking supper while Ian and Merry Grace ran in and out of the house.  I had the windows open and could hear them playing and was checking on them every few minutes.  When I walked outside I found them tying ropes onto the luggage rack or my minivan and rappelling down the windshield.  *Sigh*

Ian has officially earned the title "snaggletooth".  He lost his first tooth over the weekend, while we visited my folks.  He was quite brave.  We did run into a slight problem when he didn't find money under his pillow that first night.  Sometimes its helpful to actually let the tooth fairy know she needs to make a delivery.  But luckily, she probably just didn't know he was out of town and he was thrilled to find the money the next night.

Here is my sweet Grandma with my three little girls.  What a lovely group!

Did you know I think this baby is adorable?  Because I do.  I look at this face and want to smooch it to pieces.  I'm going to be that crazy old woman that kisses the little babies and children's cheeks with her bright red lipstick.  But I can't help it.

And its me...one of the kids stole the camera.  I'm just relieved they captured a good one for a change--not a close up of my tummy chub, me bending over with my love handles hanging out or some of the other lovely pictures I've found of myself lurking on my memory card.

So stinkin' cute.  I'm seriously going to need a thesaurus to widen my vocabulary.  I could just eat her with a spoon.

The kids love swinging at Grammy and Papa's, too.  And thankfully there are more than enough pushers, because these kids never tire of the swings.

My lovely Grandma.  Can you believe she's 88 1/2?  Isn't she just beautiful?!  I hope every day that I inherited her genes.  The best part is that she's just as sweet as she is cute. :)

Somebody help me here--what else can I say but how cute this cutie pie is?

Elise is great at hanging upside down.  It makes me dizzy just thinking about it.  I know I used to be able to do that...I think I might be getting old.

Elise is such a great sister.  All the kids are lucky to have her.  Paige, especially, loves her best of all...after her mommy of course.  Elise is so proud that Paige will go to her over Daddy.  She must be doing something right.

Flips on the rings...Elise actually went first and then Ian followed behind.  He almost got it. :)  There's a classic story in our family about my Dad attempting a flying flip on the rings.  It was a flip alright...he just threw out both shoulders in the process.  I guess he's just a kid at heart--he just forgot his body wasn't so much.

My wonderful folks.

Do you love the hair or what?

Merry Grace and Paige had fun swinging together.  Merry Grace loves being the little mama.  LOVES it.

And so does Elise.

All in all, life has been treating us well.  We're loving the weather, loving our time with family, and having fun.  What more could we ask for?
